Call on Your Senators to Investigate Wal-Mart's Role in America's Product Safety Crisis

Wal-Mart is lowering the bar for America's product safety, and it is time to hold it responsible.

In the United States, about one third of all toys are sold at Wal-Mart. With such economic clout, Wal-Mart clearly has the power to demand higher standards from its toy suppliers. Instead, it continues to import over 70% of its products from China, causing an explosion of unsafe consumer goods on the American market.

Stand together with us, and several other leading advocacy campaigns, in calling on the US Senate to investigate the role Wal-Mart plays in America's product safety crisis.

Fourteen million. That is the number of unsafe toys involved in major recalls in the past ten months. These dangerous toys have caused needless deaths and serious injuries by exposing children to risks of choking, poisoning, dismemberment, burns, and other serious hazards. Nothing is more unacceptable than allowing children to be put in harm’s way. That is why I believe it is time to investigate the role Wal-Mart, among other large retailers, plays in driving driving down product safety through their relentless pursuit of lower prices. Wal-Mart has long had the economic clout to improve product safety by holding its suppliers to higher safety standards. Instead, it has forced its suppliers to cut costs and cut corners, reaping higher profits from unsafe products. I believe the safety of our children comes before Wal-Mart’s bottom line. Please use your position in the US Senate to hold retailers like Wal-Mart accountable for the dangerous products on their shelves. Thank you,
